DIY Home Decor: Wooden Wall Art

In case you weren’t aware, I AM OBSESSED with DIY projects. There’s something so cool to me about seeing something that you love, and then re-creating it in your own unique way.

I’m getting ready to start a bathroom refresh project in my house, and lately I’ve been spending waaay too much time on Pinterest (somebody please come take my phone).

While looking for inspo., I came across a cool DIY coat rack using scrap wood.

The idea was so unique, and it looked so simple that I just had to give it a try.

I loved the concept, but instead of making a coat rack, I decided to create a piece of wall art. I didn’t have any scrap wood handy, so I picked up a wooden frame from my local craft store.

Here’s all of the supplies that I used:

The first thing that I did was sand down the wood. There were quite a few splinters, so it took a while to get the wood nice and smooth.

From there, I moved on to the staining process. Instead of using a brush, I cut up an old t-shirt and used a small piece to apply the stain. I wanted the wood to look weathered and a little distressed, so I used light strokes and was careful not to completely cover the wood.

I’m so glad that I decided to sand the wood before staining it, because the lighter color wood made for a beautiful finish.

Although the stain dried almost instantly, I waited about an hour before moving on to the next step, which was taping.

For me, this was definitely the fun part, because the design is totally preference, and there’s no right or wrong way to do it. I ended up with a few large spaces on the outer corners, and a small cluster in the middle.

Once I had the tape situated exactly the way I wanted it, it was time to paint.

I even commissioned a little help from my trusted and extremely talented assistant:)

I let the paint dry overnight, although this wasn’t a necessary step (an hour or two would have definitely sufficed). Between sanding, staining, painting and photographing, it ended up being an all-day project. Because of that, I spent the rest of the evening enjoying my family.

The next day, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. Pulling the tape off would be the final step, and definitely the most exciting.

Check out the precision from those tape lines…sheesh!

I had just started taking the tape off, and I was already obsessed.

This was hands down, one of my favorite DIY’s to date. There’s so much going on right now-in the world, in my life, etc., so projects like this give me an opportunity to do something for myself that makes me smile.

This project was easy, inexpensive, and a lot of fun. Not to mention, it’s a one of a kind.:)
