Master Bedroom Closet Refresh: Konmari-Inspired Declutter and Organization

So I cleaned out my closet…first metaphorically, then literally. Clutter isn’t just about hoarding a bunch of physical objects. Clutter first takes place in your mind, and it distracts you from the amazing things that God created you to do. Once you begin the process of decluttering your mind, a closet clean-out is light work!😉
Clutter is not just the stuff on your floor, it’s anything standing between you and the life you want to be living.

Clutter of the mind isn’t always necessarily negative thoughts, attitudes, etc. It could easily be that you have so much going on in your head that it all just starts to mesh together into one hugely overwhelming ball of disorder. There are so many things that I’m constantly thinking about just about every moment of every day:
- Writing out the grocery list
- Helping the kids with homework
- Tackling the laundry
- Finishing that DIY project that I started months ago (I’m always “working on” something)
- Writing a blog post
- Cleaning out my closet…

But as much as I may obsess over everything that I have to do, for the most part I can only accomplish one task at a time anyway.

Hangers are a huge part of staying organized. But if they’re thrown together without rhyme or reason and not serving their purpose, they end up contributing to the rest of the junk that you’re trying to rid yourself of.
I’m always much more productive when I make to-do lists. I start with a list of exactly what needs to be done, then I make another list of what I’ll need in order to make my first list happen.
My first list went something like this:
- Remove all clothes, shoes and bags from my closet that I no longer wear/need, and set aside for donation (this is where the Konmari method was super helpful).
- Separate the clothes I’m keeping that are out of season and store them away in vacuum-sealed bags. Get my favorite storage bags here.
- Remove all remaining items from my closet, so I can have a completely empty space to clean.
- Assemble any storage organizers. You can get the shoe racks that I used here, and the drawers here.
- Reorganize everything that I’m keeping, and set everything back up in my closet.
The process was very long, but well worth it.
My closet is definitely one of my new favorite quiet corners in my home.
You can check out my YouTube video, where I documented the entire process here:
